How do you overcome panic attacks? I’ve struggled with them for years.?

February 28th, 2010 by admin

I have had panic attacks also. I would highly recommend trying several natural strategies before doing any prescription medication. There is a great book called "Natural Relief for Anxiety: Complementary Strategies for Easing Fear, Panic & Worry" that outlines various strategies.

First, one of the most immediate things you can do is to cut out caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and any drugs. These things obviously disrupt any physical and mental balances.

Second, exercise exercise exercise. There is a lot of scientific data that says *vigorous* exercise can really be the most effective way to clean up your head and also strengthen your heart. Regular exercise (I recommend swimming as the most effective) will definitely strengthen your heart, put your blood pressure at normal levels and reduce any sensations of heart palpitations that are associated with panic attacks.

Third, take at least 2 hours per day to relax/meditate. I would recommend a combination of yoga, a soak in a hot bath or hot tub and a nap in quiet room with nothing but candles, very soft relaxing music. Turn off the phone, turn off the lights, lock the doors, just relax, breath, meditate. If you can afford massage, I think that is a way to complement this relaxation time.

Fourth, when you actually have a panic attack, try this very simple strategy. First say to yourself over and over "Everything is fine, it’s just a panic attack. People have them everyday. It’s uncomfortable but it will pass very soon." As you repeat this to yourself, breathe in very deeply and very slowly … breath in for 4-5 seconds, hold for 4-5 seconds and release for 4-5 seconds. Do this sequence 20 times in a row. It will quickly reduce your heart rate and increase oxygen flow to your brain which in turns increases your rationality, thereby reducing your irrationality (the panic).

Fifth, read the book I recommend. There are some special diet stratgies, possible food allergies that could be involved and vitamin/mineral supplements that can help you.

Sixth, find a therapist that specializes in anxiety/panic disorders. You will need to find out what is the root cause of your panic … that is, what exactly are you so afraid of?

People do conquer panic attacks. You can do it!!

Alternative treatment(s) for anxiety and panic attacks?

February 28th, 2010 by admin

Does anyone know some alternative treatments that may help someone that suffers from anxiety and panic attacks?

I highly recommend a book called Feelings Buried Alive Never Die. There is a simple emotional release technique described in the book that, when done each day for 5-10 minutes, can help ease extreme emotional upsets and even some physical ailments associated with emotional problems.

I’ve used this example before in another answer, but I’m going to use it again:

I live in small, cramped quarters and often find myself bumping into things. When I bumped into things in the past I would immediately become OVERWHELMINGLY ANGRY. The anger troubled me greatly, much more than the momentary pain from bumping into things. I used the emotional release technique in the book and I’ve not been angry from bumping into things again.

Also, I used to suffer with chronic, ever present anxiety/guilt feelings. I used the technique for that as well and I’ve felt peaceful and content with my life and circumstances and relationships overall since.

I believe I will have to continue to use the technique, but it’s totally worth it! Please look into it!

How did you overcome anxiety and panic attacks?

February 28th, 2010 by admin

I just started getting some attacks and symptoms throughout my days and I googled it and all these people are saying they’ve suffered for years with disabling anxiety and you just have to learn to live with it… which of course has made me even more freaked out. I don’t even want to live if I have to deal with this! I would never actually do anything suicidal but this is making me very depressed.

Any success stories? Preferably not from using drugs but cognitive behavior therapy or something else?

The first thing I had to do was recognize that is was panic/anxiety and not a heart attack! My attacks had been so debilitating that I would often pass out and end up in the emergency room wondering what happened this time. I found a great therapist who taught me how to get through the attacks. When I felt one coming on, I would go somewhere alone, like another room or down the hall or whatever. I would sit quietly and count slowly, breathing deep and closing my eyes. Soon my heart rate would calm down, I would quit shaking and the attack would ease up. Sometimes I had to count quite high, but sometimes I could count only to 200 or so and it would ease up. The effort to count took my mind off the symptoms and I knew that my attacks only lasted 6-8 minutes, so I would just sit quietly, and keep doing the deep breathing as I was taught. Pretty soon the attack was over and I was fine. This didn’t happen over night, but as severe and as often as my attacks were, any relief at all was welcome. Now when I feel a panic attack coming on, I do the same thing, knowing that I can get through it without medication.( Xanax did help me in the beginning, but the side effects were horrible and I quit taking it.) Sometimes instead of counting to myself, I would count on my fingers or picture the numbers in my mind-anything to take my mind off the symptoms of the attack. Give it a try-it might work for you!!! I’d also suggest a good therapist. I also learned meditation and yoga to help me relax. Both can be wonderful tools to help you. Best of luck-you can do it!!!

Overcoming Panic with Meditation

February 26th, 2010 by admin

Since the 1960’s meditation has been a subject which has received a lot of attention in the West.

The benefits of meditation are now indisputable. Improved mental clarity reduction of stress hormones and improvement of general well being have been proved in many scientific studies.

A very simple but phenomenally powerful technique which I love to tell people about is the ‘Hong Saw’ meditation technique. The technique is very similar to the ‘Trancendental Meditation (TM)’ technique taught to the Western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Hong Saw technique is mentioned in the famous book Autobiography of a Yogi. Like TM Hong Saw uses a mantra (simply a repeated word) to draw the mind away from internal dialogue and stressful repetitive thoughts into a condition of stillness.

Stress is caused in the physiology by the mind. The mind thinks that something should be different. This something may be in the past, present or future. The stress is caused simultaneously with the thought – ‘this should be different’ or “she shouldn’t have” or he shouldn’t have” or “I shouldn’t have to…”

The meditation mantra soothes the stressed mind. It gives the mind a break from the stress, anxiety or even panic inducing thought patterns that repeat constantly throughout our waking hours. When this break occurs the physiology has a chance to repair, become stronger and more energetic.

Let me know if you want to hear more about meditation or the Hong Saw technique – leave a comment

Panic Disorder

February 26th, 2010 by admin

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurring severe panic attacks. It may also include significant behavioral change lasting at least a month and of ongoing worry about the implications or concern about having other attacks. The latter are called anticipatory attacks (DSM-IVR). Panic disorder is not the same as agoraphobia, although many with panic disorder also suffer from agoraphobia.

Panic disorder sufferers usually have a series of intense episodes of extreme anxiety during panic attacks. These attacks typically last about ten minutes, but can be as short-lived as 15 minutes and last as long as twenty minutes or until medical intervention. However, attacks can wax and wane for a period of hours (panic attacks rolling into one another), and the intensity and specific symptoms of panic may vary over the duration. Common symptoms of an attack include rapid heartbeat, perspiration, dizziness, dyspnea, trembling, uncontrollable fear, hyperventilation, etc.
